Average Temperature: Winter months - 71 degrees F; Summer months - 78 degrees F. Highest Recorded Temperature: Kahului Airport - 96 degrees F, Kihei - 98 degrees F. Lowest Recorded Temperature: Kahului - 48 degrees F, Haleakala - 14 degrees F. Rainfall: Maui precipitation runs the gamut...rain forest to desert conditions! Overall, the past few years have been extremely dry. Kihei receives 13 inches (all during the winter); Hana is suffused with 90 inches per year while mountain areas may get over 400 inches! Trade Winds: These nearly constant breezes keep Maui's thermostat set on comfortable. Coming from the northeast at about 5-15 miles per hour, they naturally cool and clear the air. Kona Winds: They come in the opposite direction of the trade winds and usually herald bad weather. Local residents are so in tune with their surroundings they can often smell and feel the change these winds bring. Rainbows: They are plentiful here, but be on the lookout for ghostly moonbows at night! There is a Hawaiian song about the rare orange-red rain of Upcountry Maui. |
Rule of Thumb: Wind conditions are nearly always calm in the morning but kick up in the afternoon. The wind dies down again by the late afternoon or early evening. Weather Phenomenon: Maui doesn't have true smog, but things can get smoky. Hazy weather here is due to:
